The modular power plant in Sittingbourne was designed to balance the local electricity network and ensure grid resilience. The goal was to provide a reliable and flexible power source capable of supporting the grid during peak demand and maintaining overall system stability.
Asoto delivered and commissioned three containerized power modules, custom-built according to the client’s specifications. Each module is equipped with a Jenbacher 6th series J620 engine, capable of producing 2.7 MW of electricity.
The modules are fueled with natural gas and designed solely for electrical energy production. Since the heat generated during power generation is not utilized in this application, it is discharged via dry coolers mounted on top of the containers.
The plug & play power modules are housed in transportable steel containers with a spacious and service-friendly layout for easy maintenance and operation. Each container is divided into two rooms — the machine room, which accommodates the genset and all necessary auxiliaries, and the control room, which houses the safety and control systems.
The container floor is made of chequer plate and constructed to function as an oil leakage sump. For optimal noise isolation, the interior is lined with mineral wool, an insulation membrane, and perforated metal plating to ensure durability and long-term performance.
The overall dimensions of the containerized power plant, including exhaust and cooling systems, are 17,230 × 5,225 × 6,602 mm, with the exhaust pipe marking the highest point. Each module is built to operate in ambient temperatures from –10°C to +30°C and meets the noise requirement of 65 dB(A) at 10 meters.
